As a very unconventional London Fashion Week kicks off today, earlier today Burberry showcased its SS21 collection to virtually host show ‘In Bloom’. Opening with a pre-show talk show, Erykah Badu, Rosalía, Steve Lacy and Bella Hadid hosted the event, chatting everything from connecting with nature in lockdown to meeting Burberry’s creative director Riccardo Tisci.
Viewers were soon transported to an outdoor runway – a homage to the house’s heritage. A live performance choreographed by contemporary artist Anne Imhof accompanied the project, where varying cameras showcased a range of updated themes and pieces from the British label’s archive.
New to the collection was the launch of an all-over Mythological and marine life motifs entertwined with complete with an accompanying Burberry Monogram and check. Sea maiden artworks, mermaid, mermen, shark and lighthouse motifs hand-penned and montaged in a collection inspired by regeneration and dynamic youth
Told across a contemporary fairy tale – a love story blooms between a mermaid and a shark, peices from the womens collection include Buberry’s iconic trench coat which has been transformed with rubberised cotton, leather and denim jacket details, sculptural loop-back lapels and signature cut-outs.
Playing on texture and transparency: sheer chiffon trousers are adorned with printed shorts, alongside stretch-satin corseted dress in ruffled tulle layers. Crystal mesh under T-shirts and over shirts and coats offer a modern day streetwear asetheic whilst sheer draped dresses, a polo shirt and second-skin leggings provide elegant evening wear. Other highlights include a series of contoured silhouettes in printed and ruched jersey.
Elsewhere we see the cut-out top handles of Burberry’s Pocket Bag, reimainged for porthole details on men’s wader and calf-length boots and women’s over-the-knee and foldover ankle boots. Peep-toe mules are also incoperated in leather and crystal mesh.
