Born and raised in West London, Alana Maria makes her entrance to the UK scene with her first track, ‘Happier’. An initial showcase to her accessible, authentic and relatable UK R&B/pop, the break-up track samples early 90’s release ‘There’s Nothing Like This’ by soul singer, Omar.
We caught up with 19 year-old singer to talk lockdown, being a ‘people person’ and personal growth.
How are you finding the change in routine since lockdown?
Being inside for so long has had such a big impact on my day-to-day. I’m so used to being active and travelling but it’s definitely made me more introverted and restless!
That said, it’s actually given me time to focus more on my craft and I’ve began teaching myself how to produce; I’ve set up my own studio in my room 😊
What would you recommend people do in all the ‘spare’ time they are now experiencing?
I honestly think this isolation has helped a lot of people either find passions/motivation and/or hobbies. We all naturally procrastinate and I feel like being left to our own devices has motivated us to peruse new hobbies, or do things that we maybe would’ve been too lazy to do otherwise…
Has being in quarantine affected your mental health in any way? If so, what do you do to overcome those feelings?
I do struggle with anxiety sometimes. The best way for me to feel better is through music. Oh, and fresh air! Taking a walk and listening to music is a great way to switch off for a bit.
What inspires you?
My main inspirations are happiness and success. Feeling good in what you do and also making others feel good in any way, shape or form is definitely something that I strive for; I just enjoy making people happy. I want to have and feel a connection with my audience/supporters instead of just a static artist/fan relationship. I think I’ve always been what you’d call a “people person”.
When you get a moment to PAUSE, what do you do for fun?
Laugh! Laughing heals everything! Also, being with friends, having positive vibes and definitely good food.
If you could be anywhere on earth, where would you be and why?
I would be in a hot country with a plate of food, a cocktail and in the company of my friends and family. I think that’s what everyone wants right now!
If your style was a song, what would it be?
Hot Like Fire by Aaliyah ft Timbaland. The music and the essence it brings just matches my style, I think. I’m a 90’s soul at heart!
Describe a time where you took your fashion sense too far, or had a style mishap
I bought a dress that I thought would look great on but I actually looked more like a Christmas tree…TOO MANY RUFFLES!
Tell us something your followers don’t know about you.
I used to be an athlete before I took up music. I was competing against boroughs and counties. I was one of the top 3 fastest females in my borough!
What can we expect from you for 2020?
2020 will be a year of growth for me. And I’ll, of course, be releasing more songs!
