We caught up with breakout R&B star and singer-songwriter, Dolapo, to discuss her latest, catchy single ‘It’s Alright‘. She also shared with us a weird but delicious snack she swears by, her travel plans as soon as they let us back outside and her love for diamantes.
Tomi: It’s Alright’ is so smooth. It’s so smooth the way you sang about how a man should leave his girl and get with you instead.
Dolapo: That was just a fun persona to step into, obviously I’m not out here stealing anyone’s man [laughs].
T: Oh okay because I was going to ask if the song is autobiographical?
D: Nah nah nah nah. It’s just more the boujee aspect, just knowing you can upgrade a guy.
T: The cover art for the single is giving me early 2000’s feels. What is your favourite fashion trend from that era?
D: Oooh…I think it just has to be diamante everything, diamantes on jeans and I love the diamante Baby Phat logo.
T: I’ve seen the #ItsAllRightChallenge with your fans showing off their best at home looks. What is your current at home go-to look?
D: A headscarf, a baggy t-shirt and some shorts to be honest, I can’t lie [laughs]. That’s the fun part about being at home, always being in comfortable clothing.
T: What new flavours can your fans expect on your next project?
D: Definitely still being very experimental with the R&B sound, more female collaborations and good vibes.
T: What songs are in your current rotation that make you want to back it up with ease?
D: [Laughs] I’ve been listening to the new Kehlani album and she has a few joints that make me want to turn into some type of bedroom diva. Her album is fire!
T: If you could re-do a soundtrack for a movie, which one would you pick and why?
D: The ‘Fast & Furious’ series but the earlier ones and I loved Devon Aoki, her whole aesthetic. I would create a bad-ass song around her.
T: What have you been snacking on during the quarantine?
D: Everything! Oreo puff puffs and I’ve been making them from scratch.
T: Did you say Oreo puff puffs?
D: You put the oreo in the puff puff and then you fry it. Come on, it’s just an amazing mixture of goodness.
T: I’ve never heard of that, I need to try this soon!
D: Ahhh it’s amazing!
T: I laughed when I saw #freeus on one of your Instagram posts, what is the first thing you’re looking forward to doing when the lockdown is over?
D: Probably going out to eat, I miss going to restaurants as I’m a real foodie. I miss trying out different foods and experimenting.
T: What place do you want to travel to first?
D: I should be in Bali right now for my birthday celebrations. I’m so heartbroken so Bali and Nigeria as well.
T: Aww happy birthday!
D: Thank you!
T: When you get a moment to pause, what do you like to do for self-care?
D: Stay as far away from my phone as possible, that’s the most important thing to me as I’m always glued to it and refreshing my emails. I work 24/7 so when I just want to pause, I put my phone down – it’s important for my mental.
