Nike Launches Its First Collection Designed by Serena Williams Design Crew

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that when tennis sensation Serena Williams joins forces with Nike, it will turn into something great. A notable distinction considering the 39-year-old has been a Nike athlete since 2003.  

The Serena Williams Design Crew (SWDC), an apprenticeship programme promoting diversity in the design field – was established as a result of the collaboration between Nike and Serena in 2019. Melding together 10 talented designers from NYC, the organisation brought SWDC to Nike’s World Headquarters for six months in order to unveil a Serena-inspired collection of women’s performance and lifestyle products that included footwear, apparel, accessories, and more.

Through its seamless integration of sport and culture, it evokes nostalgia for the 90s.

Throughout the drop, William’s heritage and legacy are explored through her past and present, as well as the future she is shaping. The collection reflects Nike’s commitment to encoding deep meaning into its products and apparel for athletes

Noteworthy items from the capsule include bodysuits, tops, shorts and leggings, emblazoned with bold prints inspired by West Africa’s Kente cloth, William’s daughter’s initials and her signature. In footwear, SWDC has cleverly revamped the Court Legacy, RYZ 365 2 and the Air Max Koko.
