PAUSE Her caught up with Ocean Lewis (Athlete, Model and Artist) to talk all things fashion and adventure to mark the launch of the New Balance AW19 collection.

What would your dream job be?

I like to think I already love what I’m doing, but I would like to enhance all of it, including just my art and my modelling and athletics. So do all of it but just on a bigger scale. Bettering yourself always.

What’s your favourite outdoor place to explore?

My favourite place to explore, and my favourite place to go to where I always learn something new is probably Bali. Just because of the different culture, every time I have gone there, I’ve learnt something new or met someone who’s changed my insight on something. The fact that you actually see where stuff is, drawing it all back to where it came from, and meeting certain families and stuff. Mostly the culture, I feel like you don’t really get that as much in London because it’s always like a second-generation kind of thing and never the actual core of what it is supposed to be.

Whether it’s the great outdoors or your local city, what do you most enjoy about being outdoors?

The fact that it’s so different from your day-to-day life of living in central London. You can get dirty, and you can see sheep and horses, and be in the grass. I just like that it’s so different that’s why I think a little escape to the countryside is always nice and refreshing, just because it’s a different environment and it can really help with your mind.

Describe what being an outsider means to you.

For me, it just literally means being outside, all the time. Being at one with what’s around you, not what’s inside — or going out of your comfort zone.

How do you blaze your own trail in life?

How I think I blaze my own trail is just by being true to myself and coming as I am. Not overthinking or watching what everyone is doing, because everyone is on their own trail and you’ll never be able to relate to theirs, and they cannot relate to yours. So if you focus on yourself, and do what you truly want to do, not what you subconsciously want to do by taking in everything around you, I think you can easily blaze your trail.

What’s the most adventurous thing you have done?

The most adventurous thing I’ve done is also the most rewarding thing I’ve done. I was allowed to travel to Maputo in Mozambique, and I got to help fight malaria in Maputo, and I got to go into houses and help the people that live there fight off mosquitos with sprays. It was absolutely amazing, and it was crazy for me because it was so different from life at home and I got to meet all these different families. It was great to help, and it was a situation I’d never been in before. It was scary, but I enjoyed it.

Fashion, just like trailing, is a lot about balance. So what’s one item you’d pair with a pair of trails sneakers to make a fire outfit?

Probably a bum bag. I wear a bum bag with nearly every outfit, and I think it’ll go with some trail sneakers too.

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as quite tom-boy-ish, but with a little bit of sport as well. I do love my designer stuff too, so just a big mixture of that. I’m not very girly at all, but I do love a crop top and a baggy bottom: that tom-boy, Aliyah vibe.

Where do you start when putting together a look?

I personally start with either shoes or a coat. Just because I feel that usually gets seen the most, I think people don’t really focus on what kind of jeans your wearing or what crop top you’re wearing. If it’s winter, I’d say coat, and if it’s summer, then I’d say shoes.

If you could hike or trail anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I’d love to hike or trail probably somewhere in Portland. A friend of mine is from there, and I see all her pictures of when she goes hiking or trailing, and it looks absolutely stunning — definitely Portland.
